I've never actually been in the water in the middle of a storm. |

You think this guy said the same thing?
http://www.nesurfari.com/pages/goforit.htm Just get out there and search for a protected spot. You'll be fine. Just eat your vitamins, you'll need them! The paddle out is always fun in a NorEaster! |

speaking of ?,
am I being overly judgemental when I see a car with board nose first (sometimes even fin down) on the roof rack? Not looking to bash anyone just curious? [This message has been edited by Saltatrix (edited 16 November 2002).]

Saltatrix, I hear ya man. Here's another one for ya if we're "being judgemental".
How about when you see that brand new 9'Robert August strapped to the top of that brand new Mercedes and the tool driving it gets out to check out the waves while standing next to you and starts using ALL the lingo he read about in "Surfing for Dummies". God I love those guys. I figure it's only a few months before that 3/2 shortie isn't warm enough for him and he sells that board to me for 1/2 price! Salt, did you hit it "locally" this weekend or did you venture South? I figured for sure I was going to see you out there. No luck. Sandeater, I hope you hit the beach and didn't waste a great weekend on the slopes. Wait till January before you start splitting time. The snow isn't THAT good yet... |

Juiceguy, you're right, it would have been a waste of great surf to go to the mountains this weekend, although, for backcountry touring, it really doesn't take that much snow to make it fun. I did get into the water and it was a blast - I cought a few nice drops and got mauled too. Probably, one of my last better sessions for the season. I'm a sponger and the 2mm socks I wear in my fins are just not enough insulation. I don't really feel like buying a new set of fins to accomodate thicker socks. So with exception of a warm water trip I'm planning for January, that's it for me 'till May.

Sandeater, glad to hear you got wet. Hey, where do you like to do your backcountry tours? Do you ski or snowboard? I went to school up in NH but never really found any spots that were open enough for backcountry stuff. Any recommendations?

stowe has sick backcountry. canon has a old abandoned mtn, but everyone knows about it. surfing's better than snowboarding though.

JK333, I'm pretty sure I know where you go at Stowe. I've been there too. The little moutain to the right of Stowe, right? The one that's usually closed down, i can't recall the name. I've done that one before.
Where is the Mtn. at Cannon? I've been there a lot but never knew that existed. Is it N or S of the main parking lot at Cannon? Don't worry, my skiis/boards won't be coming out anytime soon. Plenty of time for that later in the year... |

Juiceguy, the term backcountry can be somewhat realitive. On Cannon Mt, you can access what used to be a ski aeria, called Mittersil. The trails are getting a bit bushy here and there, but it's an easy "backcountry" experience without much work. Accesable from the tram. The area is locatted to the right as you're facing the mountain. It's not exactly a secret, but some nice powder can be found there after a dump.
As to other places, I've done some easier trails using tourning XC set up - 3 pin binding, ankle high leather boots. Stiff enough to brake trail, too wimpy for effective telemark down steeper stuff. It's more like doing XC in the forest. My favorites are Livermore trail, Mast Road trail, and few others that connect the lower Whites with Kangamangus. Most trails in the Whites are really quite narrow and not very suitable for alpine descents, but there are some. They are detailed in David Goodman's "Backcountry Skiing Adventures". The skiing community is much less guarded about its spots that the waveriding folk, so the book is quite deatiled. It's geared towards telemarkers, but the routes described are rated for snowboarders as well (providing that you snowshoe in). Since I'm neither, I've been advised to get an alpine touring bindings so I can skin up some steeper stuff like on Mt. Washington, Cardigan, Garfield. Check it out. For that kind of backcountry, one needs a really solid snow cover, so I don't expect to do that untill January or later. |

Sandeater, thanks for the info. I'm going to check out that book you recommended. I'm not a tele or XC guy, but I downhill and snowboard. I also have snow shoes and like to "earn my turns" as they say, so I'm looking forward to checking some of these places out. Thanks again!
