Shortboard, or not to shortboard?

This is gettin me a lil scared, I went to this site (via my cool friend) and all I seem to sense is longboarding.... I'm a lil whigged because I've been surfing cal for my entire life...surfin shortboard. I figure being 5'2'' has its great attributes to shortboarding. Anyway, since I'm coming to Boston U for school, I'm trying to find the best and nearest surfing locations. Yet, I want a great loc that I can use my 5'10'' and 6'2'' on. Do I have any hope....?
I Appreciate suggestions greatly,
Jen http://www.nesurf.com/ubb/smile.gif

don't worry there are plenty shortboarder to go around,

I will will longboard only when its small, (bellow waist/chest)
waist or bigger its shortboard, and if I can justify taking my 7' rounded pin (double over head +) out then all the better. but thats only like once a year, if that.

I responded on where to surf at your other post and you can definetly shortboard at Good harbor or Long Beach in Gloucestor. Long Beach is all shortboarders and i use my 6'3 at good harbor a lot during swells. i prefer GH, its normally longboards but when a swell hits it gets steep and real heavy and shortboards rule!

it's cool.....just if you get in my way at Matunuck I'll crush you & the lil' board as I cruise by!!!...just like Cali duuuuude

The Monkey-Man 21st June 2001 22:24

only kidding Jen......the reason so many longboards are the waves often aren't quick enough for the shorter ones.....still a lot use them......I surf Rhode Island.....lots of fun breaks.......ps......BU?????? come on!!!! you'll love Boston though, great college town...about 50 schools in the area.....they drive like maniacs though!!!!

Jen. My nephew is 5 feet 10",165lbs, and he surfs a fish most of the time....even in knee high slop. he has used it in 6 plus feet hurricane surf but it is very loose then.
mostly for knee to waist though you will want
a basic egg shape or long board. even an eight footer would work well in most knee to chest high in these here parts.....let us know what u decide:-).todd.

you can easily shortboard around here and it'll be plently big just as long as its not summer. waves get consistently overhead in the fall winter and early spring.

Sweet. That was a lot of responses...neat!
Now, I need to find out where you peeps go to buy your gear...
For monkey man....yeah, that's right..Boston U...I'm a terrier...any probs wit that? I'd be more worried that I'd rip you over with my fast lil board, than being "run over" by your big board...hehe. Remember, in cal...there is no longboarding..except for the old peeps. http://www.nesurf.com/ubb/smile.gif Oh, and I've already almost been hit by a taxi in boston, yep, it was a neat experience... Lates.

Nice to see a west coast girl stoked to surf the noreast. Could you please pray for surf its been flat so long i think i might have forgot how to surf.

cordy 26th June 2001 13:58

There are plenty of shortboarders up here in New England. If the waves are small (knee-waist) I will ride my fish. Waist+ and I will ride my 6'4". During big hurricane/nor-easter swells, I will bust out my big board...a 6'6".

I rode my fish this weekend and caught some fun waist high waves in Rhode Island. Not epic, but fun enough to stay charged while waiting for the hurricane season to heat up.

surferdust123 12th July 2001 16:35

SWEET. Okay, yeah...I'll definatly Pray for Surf for you guys and chicks. Yet, until late August I'll be in Cal getting my fill of sixers. lol. On a serious note, the word is "surf shops"...where can I find em' and which ones do you peeps go too?????
From some responses I was told to invest in a full wet-suit...the ones I have for cali I guess arn't "full" enough.lol. Ohhhh...can't wait for the cold water...brrrrr. scary.
Prayin here...

Shops:

Check the list in the Links section: close to the bottom of the page. Honestly, they're all good in different ways and I have yet to meet a local store owner I didn't like.

I have a couple of favorites but, for the obvious reason that I run this site, I won't disclose them...

The surf industry should love the easterners...who else needs everything from boardshorts to a 6/4/3 suit and 7mm boots and everything in between. Sure makes small apartments smell funny, that's fer sure.

surferdust123 14th July 2001 02:03

Hey Chris....
Of course you can, "tell" me your fav shops...hehe. Just you know, if you feel the need to mail me anything...like at my addy ziggystardust123@yahoo.com would be within your powers I'm sure. http://www.nesurf.com/ubb/wink.gif
nobody has to know...lol.

Different strokes for diffirent folks...and different surf conditions. I ride long, hybrid, and shortboards depending on swell. There are plenty of options in New England to surf all types of waves. You're going to need some gear if you plan on surfing after September...3/2 or 4/3 full, 6/5/4 or 5/4 full, 5-7ml boots & gloves, and a car with good heat. BU? I thought you were from California?...not New Jersey! http://www.nesurf.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Jen,

PS...please see the pics section on this website. Click on "your secret spots". I just submitted a few photos from this past winter/spring. The first 7 shots are mine. No need to "whig"...plenty of fast, hollow, waves.
