Howdy all,
I have an older Santa Monica surfcase for sale. It's blue & can fit up to 3 9-foot longboards or funboards inside. These things sell new on their website for $269, I understand. I'm looking for $125 for mine. The case is in good shape - it has some scratches but is solid overall. BTW, I'm located on Cape Cod.
Drop me an email if you're interested...

Thanks,
JCW

Don't worry Spartan - he's keeping both. I'll call him tomorrow. I simply couldn't make the trip all the way there (NH practically) just to pick it up. Oh well, I lose...

Okay, so let me tell you a little about this board case. I put it in the Want Advertiser about a year ago for $90 and JCW called to say he wanted it. Because he lives in the Cape, 2 hours south of where I live, I was nice enough to offer to meet him somewhere. He was supposed to come up with a place and time, but never called back. Over the past year JCW has called me multiple times about this case, each time with a different story as to why he wants it (I’m going to California, I’m shipping a board, I’m going to Hawaii). Finally, about a month ago, he calls to say he wants the case because a friend has invited him to stay in Oahu for a couple of months and he wants to bring his boards. At the time, I was selling a bunch of stuff and wanted to get rid of the case so I said “Look, to make the 2 hour drive worth your while, I’ll knock it down to $65.” He was stoked and said he’d come to get it and even sent me a $65 money order so I wouldn’t have to wait for the money. Cool, right? WRONG.
A couple of weeks go by and he still hasn’t picked it up, which is a bummer since I wanted the case gone (it takes up a lot of space in my shed), and he calls me to ask if we can meet in Braintree. I told him no, as the reason I knocked the price down so low was to avoid the rendez vous plan. So he tells me he’s got a friend who might be able to pick it up for him. I was nice enough to leave the case out in my yard and allow his “friend” (whom I’ve never met) to come get it, but the guy never showed. Actually, someone did come to look at it, but didn’t pick it up, which was obvious due to the fact that I left the case standing up and when I came home it was laid out, one half stacked nicely on the other. I think the guy who came to see it was a potential buyer who decided not to buy. More on that BELOW.
Last night a friend of mine sees this ad posted, and, wondering if this is indeed my case, e-mails JCW to ask about it. JCW says “I forgot to say this in my ad, but it’s actually at a ‘friend’s’ house (MY HOUSE) and you can pick it up there.”
Now, JCW … You want to lie to me about some imaginary trip to Oahu? I don’t really care. It’s your conscience. You want to buy a board case from me and sell it for double what you paid? I have no problem with that either. People do it on EBAY all the time. BUT you have the balls to try and use my house as your personal little auction site and tell complete strangers to come to my house to buy something from YOU – all this without telling ME – now we have a problem.
As of right now, the Santa Monica surf case is for sale for $100. But JCW is no longer selling it … I AM. JCW, if you want it, it’s going to cost you $60 in storage fees, which, as fate would have it, brings your price up to the $125 tag you put on it.
My advice to anyone considering doing business with JCW is RUN! Don’t walk, RUN! And you’re lucky I’m not using your real name, JCW!!!
And by the way, thanks to Spartan for giving me the heads up on this.

Hey Bsurfer,
You can keep the case. I shouldn't have even bothered buying it @ all. I was probably never going to make that drive just to pick it up anyway. My priorities changed (as they do often), and I tried to pull a fast one to bail my ass out of the obligation. We've all done that @ one point or another in our lives. It just so happens I got caught this time.
It wasn't the most honest or bright thing to do, but oh well...I had a momentary lapse of reason. There isn't much else to say except I do have remorse, not that it'll really matter in a public forum like this, anyway.
I'm wearing the scarlet letter now...plus a target on my back. Gentlemen, fire away.

JCW is quite an innovative businessman. In fact, I think I may have learned something from him.
Tell you what. I've got a six-pack of beer that I'm willing to sell for double the price I paid for it. It's located in JCW's refrigerator. First make sure you send me the money for it, but after that feel free to go into his house and look through his fridge. Bring along some friends and take a nap in his bed if you want while you're there. And if you feel like, you can even play grabass with his boyfriend if he's around, but that costs extra. Just send me a check.

Hey Taj,
No worries about how you left the case and I'm sorry you made the trip for nothing. And hey, how were you supposed to know what JCW was up to?
But I'm glad you posted your reply because at least now I know my suspicions were correct. JCW didn't send a "friend" to my house --he sent a complete stranger.
Dude, it's one thing to send somebody you know (and trust) over to my house to "pick up" a board case for yourself. But to send Taj over, who (no offense) for all we know could spend his spare time impregnating family pets in the area, to check out an item that you're reselling for more than it's worth ... that sucks.
To quote a wise man I know, "Surfing is a brotherhood." Surfers are supposed to share a common stoke, their love for the ocean and the pura vida that it brings, not try to take advantage of each other for their own gain (unless, of course, that gain is the occasional killer wave). JCW obviously doesn't get that.
And that being said, I take back what I said about not shelling the shit out of him. Open fire.
Oh, and Can'tStandUp, how much you asking for that six pack?
Pray for surf.

I'm just guessing at JCW's taste in beer, but it must be Keystone Light, so double the price of that would be $5. Like I said, feel free to go into his shack and make yourself at home. Just make sure to turn on the lights so you don't trip over the "Buns of Steel" VHS cassettes he leaves laying around the kitchen.

Trying to pull a fast one to "bail my ass out" is not something we've all done. Only the true assholes among us have. I get the feeling that this guy wouldn't have felt remorse if he hadn't got caught. Get a clue, pulling "fast one's" on your fellow surfers, or anybody, is a great way to earn a well deserverd bad reputation.
And what does he mean "I got caught this time"?
Fuck.

You know what? I really fucked up. I shouldn't have taken advantage of bsurfer, Tash or anyone else in this whole scenario. One thing I can assure everyone of, though - it was a one-time thing. This is not how I regularly treat people. I basically acted my shoe size instead of my age. It was an incredibly self-centered & deceitful thing to do.
I'm a motherfucking asshole for it & should be hung by my sac hairs off some really tall powerlines as punishment. How's that for personal truth?
All this being said, my point is that I've admitted to my mistake & really am sorry. Short of Catholic confessional, it's about the only recourse I have right now.
And the target practice continues...

Okay JCW,
Ease up on yourself there. Hung from powerlines, maybe. But really tall ones? That's a little masochistic.
I guess I had my initial anger/frustration rekindled by Tash's response, but it sounds like you really could be sorry and I actually believe you when you say you don't normally pull shit like this.
So I'm calling off the dogs. I wash my hands of any further JCW bashing, unless it's for his bad taste in beer and fitness videos.
Let's concentrate on more important things, like watching pointless reality surf shows while we wait for these crappy waveless weather patterns to end.
Pray for surf.

Bsurfer, I also came by to take a look at that case. As I was walking in the backyard, I noticed that the grass was a little brown. So I drove over to the Harbour garden center and got you some scotts plus 2 weed control and fertalizer. I also installed a sprinkler system. Please dont be mad at me. Ps If you look up at your house from the street, 4th cladboard from the top on the bedroom window side. I touched it up with some paint I found in the celler. If I where you I would get some money back from that half ass painter! Again Im sorry Sonny

Thanks for the vote of confidence bsurfer. The (duh!) responsible thing to do would've been for me to admit my inability to pick up the case within a timely manner in the first place. Then we could've worked something else out, & I'd have no reason to pull such idiotic, childish bullshit @ all.
But stupid is as stupid does, sir...
Anyway, I stand sufficiently flogged and adjudicated.
BTW, major apologies also go out to Tash & the Spartan for dragging them into this mess. Sorry guys...

JCW, You see what a nice guy Bsurfer is? (though I happen to know he stuffs his wetsuit with a cucumber, ala Spinal Tap) He's willing to let you off the hook for all your chicanery even though you gave strangers permission to goof around in his yard, not knowing if you were putting his family in danger. It's my opinion that his forgiveness should make you feel even worse.
And what's with all this remorse all of a sudden? There are people who do shitty things to others, and there are people who don't. Live with it. And get it straight, you didn't admit to your mistake, you were caught and exposed.
And that's a cute line you end with "And the target practice continues." Stop it, you're gonna make me cry. You've got it wrong though. Target practice implies that you are a practice target, and you're not. You're the real thing, chump.

It is most certainly a sincere apology. There will be others here who write me off permanently as a total asshole, & that's their choice. I certainly don't blame then for it. Don't misunderstand, I'm not wallowing in self-pity...I'm just being honest & realistic.

Hey Tubba,
Maybe you're right about leopards and maybe I'm being naive, but I'm willing to give JCW the benefit of the doubt for now. Only time will tell if he's truly a one-time swindler or a habitual one.
Plus, the verbal trouncing he took here should make him think twice about pulling something like this again. After all, the surf community ain't all that big around here (it's getting bigger than I'd like but it's still pretty close-knit) and it probably wouldn't be too difficult to find him out a second time.
Meantime, after reading back through this thread, I have to agree w/ Sonny ... this whole thing was/is pretty entertaining. Maybe it could be made into an after-school special and we can get Gary Busey to play JCW.
