I am 6'2", 190lbs. I have windsurfed, snowboarded etc and want to try surfing. I am looking for a board, I am guessing a longboard or minimal? Had some shops rec a Bic, heard mixed thngs on that. I would be interested in boards that fit the above needs.

defintely buy a longboard. go to a good shop, like say levitate, and they will point you in the right direction.

be careful though, make sure you talk to someone at the shop that knows what they are talking about. you can get some bad info and end up with too small which is useless as tits on a bull.

again, try levitate.

Check out Nor'easter in north scituate. All the guys there can hook you up with anything you need. For best advice talk to Mark or Nick!

Don't listen to what anyone of these guys say, smaller is better. Bigger boards just get in the way when you are starting out, they don't duckdive, and they pearl/nosedive way too easily. For a beginner your size, i would check out a nice 5'8" thruster... merrick is the best bang for the buck i would say... don't forget to check out sticker and airbrush decortion options... K-fins are a must as well, and a nose guard.

****
honestly... check out a reasonably cheap board with some volume. Softops are acually a really great option IMHO (i still ride my friend's in small waves since i don't own a Longboard). I would say in general a min 8' for your size (i'm 6' 180" and i occasionally ride a 7'6" funshape... and i think it would be a bit small for me were i just starting out...)

Talk to someone in the shop, but yeah, if you can, please no bics.

don't go with a bic, you'll be unhappy quick. check the local shops for used longboards. talk to the staff. lbs turn over pretty quick this time of year. noreaster got a couple last week. in nh check cr's wrv shop boards for low-end nice new boards.

Ok, thanks for the comments and the references to shops and staff. I am not concerned about graphics etc, I will be lucky to even catch a wave, I know that so I know looking cool will never be an option. I do want to have something that will make it easier to learn, that means a longboard of some sort. Probably should move this to another forum?
Used Mctavish Original 9'1"(too much to start with?). Thanks!

Levitate has a bunch of new good longboards in the shop for reasonable prices. Don't go to nor'easter, it kinda sucks.

I love all the hate with bics. Its like when everyone started they were rich or pros. I started on a bic and it was great. you could float a truck on it or run it over with a steamroller and who cares because its a bic. great board to start on since you are going to beat the crap out of it and they are cheap. It doesn't make sense to pay a lot for a board when it will most liekly take a beating.

rider rust i agree to a degree. but a great man named bob, he told me to buy a used board, since if u buy a new baord it will look used in a week ne way. he also said that ure first board will stay with you as long as you stay with it.

on that, my first board was been thru hell and back and is still here.
gnarkills board has fought the devil, lost, and still to this day lives on. except that he ripped all the glass off and is going to reapair what i fucked up

i would get a bic, pretty bomb proof, cheap, and gets the job done. rental places sell them cheap at the end of the season.

i know a south shore surfer, screen name dickcsurfer i think, that swears by his bic. he is a pretty solid surfer, and loves his bic.

Yea, last thing I remembour this college girl I was hanging out with asked me how old I was and she flipped out saying I was a loser and should be married with kids blah blah blah. So I told her she wasn't hot enough to talk to me like that...among other things.

Sounds like the dock side. Now you knwo why I don't like that place. I know the place i hang out dont have the hottest shit but, at least they don't waste air like those chicks.

Hey, you should of asked her how long her last relationship lasted. I would have told she smells like fish and that I would n't fuck her with Totts' dick. :fu:

the shop guys can help you get a board that fits you

it will be fiberglass which is also kinda fragile for a beginner

getting a used bic is a good compromise: they are bombproof and you can resell it easily

the length issue goes like this: smaller boards are easier to maneuver and won't drag you around so much in the white water but they are less stable (harder to stand up on) and it's harder to catch waves . . . larger boards are easier to stand up on and you can catch waves easier but they are harder to maneuver and can drag you around in the white water

pick your poison . . . IMHO go with a larger board at first; best compromise; but the kid I know around the corner started out with a 7' 2" and did just fine

which is why people say "go to a shop" . . they can help you assess yourself

PM me if you want for more info
