"Pt. Judith Area" Breaks
Narragansett
Town Beach
Skill Level: For everyone.
Wave Type: Beach Break.
Best Swell Direction: ESE.
Best Wind Direction: WNW to WSW.
Best Tide: All tides.
Swell Direction Range: E to SSE.
Surfable Break Size: Thigh and
up.
Bottom Type: Sand.
Comments: A nice beach break
right in Narragansett. Can get
really crowded in the summer,
especially on days with good
weather. Town beach is often
bigger and more surfable than
other area breaks, but sometimes
closes out.
Hazards: Summer crowds.
Localism: None.
Directions: Its in Narragansett,
you can’t really miss it
once there.
Parking: The large parking lot
right in front of the beach,
which is ~$10.

Pt.
Judith Lighthouse
Point Judith aka. The Lighthouse
Skill Level: For advanced and
expert surfers only.
Wave Type: Point Break.
Best Swell Direction: SSE.
Best Wind Direction: NW to WSW.
Best Tide: Mid tide.
Swell Direction Range: ESE to
SSW.
Surfable Break Size: Thigh plus.
Bottom Type: Stone reef, rocks,
large boulders.
Comments: Long rights
on the east side of the point
(this
side is protected from W to SW
winds). A shorter left on the
west (south) side that needs
shoulder plus S or SE surf. Another
top New England spot. Not for
beginners, there are large boulders
and rocks everywhere. Also this
is not a good spot to bring no-surfing
friends (no real beach, all there
is to see is a lighthouse, from
the outside).
Hazards: Shallow rock bottom.
Large rocks. Did I mention rocks.
Localism: When it gets crowded,
rudeness, more than localism,
emerges (but mostly from the
many barely post-pubescent groms
which
frequent this break).
Directions: Take Rt. 1 follow
signs to Point Judith, take right
before you hit the Ocean and
got the end of the road (you’ll
see the lighthouse).
Parking: Large parking lot right
in front of the lighthouse.

East Matunuck
State Beach
Matunuck
Skill Level: Experienced surfers.
Wave Type: Point Break (3 Points).
Best Swell Direction: SSE.
Best Wind Direction: NW to NE.
Best Tide: Low to mid tide.
Swell Direction Range: SE to
SSW
Surfable Break Size: Waist plus.
Bottom Type: Rocks, boulders,
and sea snails.
Comments: Slow lefts and rights,
unless really big. One of the
top long boarding spots in New
England when in the waist to
chest range. There is a faster
left called Deep Hole on the
far West, but it requires chest
plus to be really fun. It can
get really crowded and is not
well suited for beginners because
of the rock bottom.
Hazards: Shallow rock bottom.
Summer crowds can be a hazard
to a good surf session...
Localism: Some in the summer
when it gets crowded.
Parking: Small parking lot right
in front of the main break (unfortunately
reserved for boating).
