What? Northeast Region Surfing Championships
When? May 2-4, 2008
Where? Montauk, NY
Its that time of year again when the top 350 ESA surfers from New England, New York, New Jersey and the Great Lakes will vie for coveted invitations to the 2008 Eastern Surfing Championships (The Easterns’ ) and the USA Surfing Championships through their Regional Championships.
These contest slots are filled by invitation only. Competitors must advance through their district to be eligible for the Regional Championships and place in the top percentage again to be invited to the East Coast Championships in the fall of each year.

CONTEST MADNESS BEGINS

The contest scene began in earnest, this past weekend, at the Narragansett Town Beach. The University of Rhode Island Surf Club put on their annual Spring Fling Surfing Championships, in solid 3-4 foot surf. The event was well attended, according to surf club president, Dominic Cerio. “We held it off until Sunday,” said Dominic, “Because of all the reports on lightning and heavy rains. The surf turned out to be much better on Sunday, so it was the right call.” Complete results will be included in next week’s column.

Toward the Great Expanse Opening at Montanaro Gallery
Montanaro Gallery will host Toward the Great Expanse on Saturday, April 12, 2008, from 5-9pm, at its new location at 18 Franklin Street in Newport. The show will feature the visual works of two artists, Julie Goldstein and Ty Williams.
Goldstein's works will include pieces on paper, fabric, wood, and canvas, created using multiple techniques including woodblock printmaking, drawing, and painting. Her large scale, hand burnished woodcut prints are a sharp contrast to her found fabrics and traditional sewing mixed media works. Her latest series employs personal storytelling and explores gender roles Full Story
RUTH ABBRUZZI CONTEST 4/26

Waterbros will be holding a surf contest in honor of Ruth Abbruzzi (Sid's mother) on April 26th.
All proceeds will be going to the Alzheimer's Association of RI.
Sign-ups start at 7AM at Second Beach and the entry fee is $20.

PROVEN FILM FEST SUBMISSIONS

PORTLAND, Maine, March 21, 2008-Proven in the Northeast is now accepting submissions for it's 4th annual boardsports film festival and contest .
Filmmakers of all abilities are invited to submit films of seven minutes or less that have elements of surfing, skateboarding and/or snowboarding in New England. There is no fee to enter.

SURFRIDER SEASON BEGINS

The Rhode Island Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation began the New Year with a string of ambitious projects that started with a new round of Blue Water Task Force water tests, on January 26th. Volunteers paddled out and took samples at 14 area surf breaks in South County and Newport. Results were released this past week, and revealed almost pristine conditions at every spot except the Watch Hill Harbor and First Beach. And even those two breaks showed Fecal Coliform and Enterococci counts well below the minimum for safe conditions.
